Wonder Woman vs. The Broken Spine

Wonder Woman vs. The Broken Spine

fromessex submitted:

This cover has always bugged me, mainly because Wonder Woman is getting pwned by an octopus. She’s supposed to be a super strong super hero!

I noticed the last redraw using 3D software was pretty popular, so I thought I’d try my hand at reworking this cover. Instead of just fixing the broken spine, I’m going to make it look like there’s actually some fight left in the girl.

Let’s start off with the woman in question; she’s muscled, toned and in my eyes, not petite, but a little bit stocky. There are boobs, but they’re mainly made up of pectoral muscle. After all, Diana is supposed to be a warrior. Worry not, she’s still got a pretty face! She’s unfortunately sporting the higher legged version of her costume, more commonly seen in more modern artwork, but it serves it’s purpose and covers up the important bits yet doesn’t teeter on the “impossible to recreate without tons of tit tape” line.

Now, if I was fighting a giant tentacled monster I’d want to be facing it. So Diana’s original pose has been almost reversed entirely. No boobs and bum this time, just a bit of boob curving nicely. The pose isn’t exactly true to the original cover, but it’s no helpless-damsel-in-distress-pose, which is what I wanted to avoid. One arm is thrown up to defend against a (now green and less wimpy looking) tentacle Handily, I can move the camera around to show the pose from a different angle. As wonder Woman is underwater we don’t have to worry so much about balance and center of gravity, but the pose still has to conform to the limits of a person’s joints.

All that’s missing now is an enemy to fight against and a few other props to show it’s all taking place underwater.

There’s no octopus/tentacled monster body visible here, because I don’t have one to use or the skill yet to make one. So taking the easier route, I’ve simply made sure it’s off screen. I still think it looks a bit more threatening than a purple octopus, albeit deviating from the original storyline. The costume and tentacles (and bubbles) were free models from sharecg.com and this entire scene was done using DAZ 3D’s free software, Daz Studio 4 and their free figure, Genesis. So if you’re not a great at drawing and want to have a go fixing escher girls, it’s a great tool that’s fairly easy to use and almost free.

Now lets turn this into a comic book style image, by rendering the image using some ‘toon’ style shaders.

This doesn’t look quite finished yet, too much empty space and lacks a bit of action.I changed the pose slightly again, as it didn’t quite feel like there was enough movement. Another benefit of working in 3D is that changing poses doesn’t mean having to redraw the entire image again. So as the final version, we have Wonder Woman grabbing a tentacle and reaching for her lasso. In the end it’s been more of a rehaul than just a redraw.

The completed redraw, I hope you like it :) :

I do like it!  Nice job.
