To understand why artist do these things with comic book anatomy we should look at the source. So say hallo to Chris Hart! Now according to his bio at the back of the book from which this lovely gem featured it says that Chris “is the world’s best-selling author of drawing and cartooning books.” You heard it first people, he apparently outsold Preston Blair, Eric Goldberg and Richard Williams. “His books have set the standards for art instruction (…) with 2.5 million copies in print in seventeen languages.” So regarding the fact that he has like 80 of these books, I’m gonna say that each sold like an average comic book today. And yes, that’s his entire track record, how-to-draw books!

So this picture here is from “Simplified Anatomy” which actually doesn’t make any sense because comic book artist already use a simplified anatomy to draw their characters. So this book is about simplifying simplified anatomy… Actually the book is not as bad as his other work, but it’s still awful, not to mention pointless. In regards to this picture, I have no idea what’s she doing. Apparently she’s casting energy while looking away from the reader and this is her rear view, but she looks more like she’s playing a double bass… Wow that’s something you don’t see every day, the anatomy of musicians. This could be his next book:”How to draw cutting edge cello player!” It will sell like hot cakes!  Also, listen what he has to say for this picture: “But one area that get’s it is the back, primarily the pine and the shoulder blades. You don’t always want to draw the spine as a single, unbroken line (…) sometimes for style, you may want to get the line lighter and disappear, and then pick it up a moment later and continue with it” and here’s the finished product:

Her head is so small and her lips are as big as their eyes. Plus, notice how the right arm has removed some of its mussels compared to the previous picture. I love it when he can’t even follow his own stupid anatomy rules.

Oh god, it’s Christopher Hart.  I actually have a number of pages from his books in this tumblr (look under Christopher Hart as a tag).  It’s not surprising a lot of people think men and women are different species when you have “how to draw” people like him saying in the books that we basically are, and that women are WAY MORE FLEXIBLE so these little V indentations in the spine are normal.
