Lady Nilstria: I put a bit more effort

Lady Nilstria submitted:

I put a bit more effort into this one.

Redrawing this was physically painful. I kept trying to make a realistic but still aesthetically pleasing pose using just my method of putting ribcage with pelvis (which has worked for me for all but the most foreshortened of poses,) but I kept failing. There is a lot going into propped up poses like these. It’s surprisingly difficult. I had to take a picture of myself in order to draw it at all.

Trying to warp my body in the original pose proved much more painful than I thought. I tried to duplicate it. I really did. My spine and hips cannot do it.

I would like to say this. There is no shame in using reference photos or living models for a difficult pose. Some things just cannot be done without them. There are too many factors. Professional artists use them all the time for unfamiliar movements like parkour or martial arts to make certain of their realism. One person cannot know everything.

Of course, an artist should not rely on reference. They should try their hardest to get the pose right before going to photos, but there is no shame in using them.

So, anyway, here’s a redraw of poor, maligned Witchblade. I hope you all like it better than the last one. :3. I colored it to make it easier to see what’s her skin and what isn’t. The lines alone got a little confusing.

You gave Sarah pants!  Oh my god!  I think she’d want to hug you just for that!
