mithvelous: I liked the idea behind J.

I liked the idea behind J. Scott Campbell’s picture of Rapunzel (lots of hair + gorgeous coloring), so I decided to take a closer look at it and see if I could do something a little more anatomically correct. I started out by outlining the body to get a better view of the issues.

I knew there was something wrong with the body before this, but….oh god. I wonder if Campbell bothered to do this at all? How did he look at this and go “YEP THIS IS SEXY”?

Here’s some of the problems I saw, in my crappy handwriting. His feet really do look like Barbie-doll feet, her legs aren’t the same length (since one of them is bent and one straight, but they end at the same spot), she has no room for organs in her waist, and there’s something weird going on with her hips. On the upper body, I felt like her arms were awfully skinny, and her head possibly too small. (My mom later pointed out that something weird is going on with her left arm as well, so we spent some time posing and trying to figure it out. I think it’s too bent or the hand is too high up or something.)

My version:

Maybe not quite as ~sexy~ as the original, but I was pretty pleased at the end. One foot is flat and one is pointed, so the bent leg is now the same length as the straight one. Hips and waist are more normal sized. Arms are more nuanced than those skinny sticks Campbell drew and the head is (hopefully) the right size. My fingers and toes are a little off, but overall I think she’s lookin’ pretty good and not monstrous there. I had fun with it, in any case!

That’s pretty good.  Nice catch on the uneven legs, because I don’t think I noticed that originally.  I’m amused and heartened that your mother also looked at this and helped point some stuff out.  Escher Girls: fun for the whole family! :)
